The Present is a Balloon
Great image from my colleague Joe Brilliant’s brother Jon Brilliant’s China blog:
China is like a great red water balloon, bright and shiny on the outside, but turgid with murky history. The more the tension of memory pushes upon the glossy membrane, the larger, and the more fragile, it becomes.
No comment on actual truth-value here; I just like the image.

I know some mathematicians believe the beauty or elegance of a solution bespeaks its accuracy. I wouldn't want to defend the notion, but it sure feels to me like this kind of perfect metaphor likewise carries the essence of its truth inside itself.

I thought we already established that China is "a tiny red Peugeot with a gold plastic dragon hood ornament" in mortal struggle with "a strange blue tricycle dumptruck carrying what appear to be 40 of the worlds oldest propane tanks".
Howard, if the beauty of a solution bespoke its accuracy, we biologists would all have to drown ourselves ("intelligent design" not withstanding).
Ah hahahahaha. Peter, your meta-snark is unparalleled.
