Awesome, New Line Cinema is making movies based on His Dark Materials. I hope they do the books justice.
I am a huge fan of the golden compass, and I still generally prefer His Dark Materials to the Chronicles of Narnia. But I generally dislike the heavy-handedness of both at times (particularly in the later books of both series).
In the vein, I thought this defense of Narnia against Pullman's critique was pretty good:
