Thing I’m Glad I’m Not Responsible For, No. 372

Headline: WHO recommends genetic altering of smallpox.

Um.

Yeah, maybe it would actually be a good idea… but it’s just the kind of thing that seems like the setup for a scary bio-thriller, doesn’t it?

“Oh my god… MY GOD… it’s eating through the lab door!”

Very funny. :-)

But seriously, it's not so much to worry about. Henderson is probably stressing because the global eradication of smallpox was sort of his baby, but it isn't globally eradicated in the sense that multiple people outside of the CDC posess smallpox stock, so the "destroy it and forget it ever existed" school of thought is kinda moot.

I'm not totally sure, but I think I know one of the scientists who's involved with this project or its cousins. Using him as a totally unscientific sampling of his ilk, I'd say they're a pretty unflappable bunch. And, really, adding green jelly fish protein to something is pretty old hat by now.

Okay. If you say so. But if I suddenly start glowing green and puking blood, I'm coming to your house.
