1-800-THIS-RULES

Maybe you’ve heard the hype about that free Internet phone app called Skype? Well, check it: It actually does rule that much. Totally clear, zero lag, better than a cell phone. (Especially when your apartment is apparently lined with lead.) And free, free, freeee.

The EST/PST time difference has stymied my calling for weeks, ‘cause by the time my cell-phone minutes are free, it’s midnight in the far-off east. No longer!

Remember Dialpad, when it used to be a free little PC-to-phone java application, with crystal-clear sound, way back in 1998? That was the jam. I used it all the time. I'd call my parents and be like, "Hey, guess what, I'm calling you free ... FROM MY COMPUTER!" and they'd be all, "WTF?! l337!!"

But no. I too marveled at Dialpad back in the day. But I assure you, Skype is everything Dialpad wished to be, and everything we wished Dialpad to be, and everything 22-year-old boys everywhere wished Star Wars: Episode I to be, all added up and multiplied by twelve.

Okay, maybe not that good.

But it's just SO clear and SO free.

Didn't Dialpad make you watch janky ads to keep talking? Or was that something else?

That was something else. Unless you caught Dialpad after the End of Free, when I don't know what crazy things they started doing.
