High Rollas

The Chronicle has a mongo database of the top 200 companies in the Bay Area, which includes this list of the top 25 by sales revenue.

I love lists like these because they always include those weird companies you’ve never heard of but secretly run your life.

Take for example McKesson. Who TF has ever heard of McKesson? Indeed, I walked past the black, monolithic McKesson tower in downtown S.F. for months before I finally got clued in: healthcare and pharmacy equipment. Check.

Even better: Sanmina-SCI and Solectron, which are both involved in the electronics manufacturing business. From what I can gather, neither actually manufactures electronics… rather, they help other companies manufacture electronics. So we have them to thank for our iPods and Xboxes. But indirectly.

The Bay Area company with the highest market cap is Intel, with a Death Star-like $145-billion dollar valuation. You know who surprised me? Yahoo, at $46-billion. Wow. I woulda given the Y! nine or ten, tops.

Of course, that’s all fuzzy stock market stuff. Where the rubber hits the road, ChevronTexaco takes no prisoners: $13-billion in annual income. Intel is the next highest at a little more than half that, $7.5-billion.

Snarkmarket brings up the rear with the $0.0000012-billion we made when EPIC got picked up by the CBC.

Dude, if you like lists like that check out the San Francisco Business Times. I think they just published their annual book of lists, and every issue has some kind of crazy Bay Area business list. They're part of a chain, bizjournals, so you might be able to get similar lists for other places.

ha ha... Yes, I just spent $0.000000001 billion dollars on a soda today! I'm thinking of merging with a friend of mine to get lunch... who knows how many billions that will cost!!
