Bill Gates... for President?

James Fallows (one of my all-time favorites) is part of The Atlantic’s crew liveblogging the Aspen Ideas Festival. Here’s an interesting note on the prospects for an independent presidential candidate sometime soon. (For the record I think Bill Gates as candidate is a horrible idea. But it makes a good headline!)

To the contrary, I have been telling anyone and everyone I know that progressives should be hot on the trail of Bill Gates to get him to run in 2008; well, hell, he wouldn't HAVE to run, to sit through press conferences or worry about negative ads. Who is going to find anything wrong with him? And his issues are progressive issues. However, my Democratic insider friends are not all that sure he's a Democrat, so he may HAVE to go independent.

Do you think the billionaire-philanthropist thing trumps the monopolist thing in everybody's mind? Hmm. I mean yeah, you could be totally right. I guess most Americans are not aware of the virulent anti-Microsoft factions that are out there... i.e. Mac users are not exactly a powerful political force ;-)

FWIW, Bill generally votes Republican.

Gazzilionaires have no 'business' running the biggest monopoly in the country. It's hard enough getting it to work properly with mostly career politicians all pulling in their own self-interested directions, while - and after - their terms end.

Robin, don't forget all the 'NIX users out there too!

Even Bill G. thinks it's time has come:;754084996;fp;2;fpid;1
