Media and the Moon

Wow. Props to Slate; this video is sharp, funny, and deflating. It answers the question: How would TV news cover the moon landing if it happened today? Sigh—the sad thing is, I think they’ve got it right.

They nailed it on the head...amazing how much we dilute historical moments with so much shit.

Admittedly though, seeing the "RIP Michael Jackson" tweet under the "neil=hott" tweet in the Twitter thread was hilarious.

Makes me really appreciate what Kottke is doing here with the "live TV coverage"

Seriously. All that distraction is a major turn-off. And the coverage of the internet can't be mocked enough.

I have an idea: a TV news station that does lavish, gritty, long and uninterrupted coverage of major events. War, political uprisings, disasters, great works of human ingenuity. Sparsely narrated with a moratorium on crawls & flashy crap. Few if any talking heads. If no TV-worthy events occur, they show the highlights of the last one rather than maintain 24-hour hysteria. The longer cuts would be compensated by the lack of twitter coverage, so the ad slots would be unchanged. Stylistically, it'd like The Big Picture for TV.
