From Above

Earth from above at The Big Picture. Hint: It’s not the above-ness that’s so great. It’s the eye for pattern and geometry. For some reason, this one really gets me.

(Also on Kottke. But I got it from the Big Picture RSS feed. Lest you think me a link-poacher.)

Amazing! I'd love to see them in person. Maybe the exhibition can detour to Minneapolis.

I've been to the place you like in photo 11! The Aran Islands are so stark and beautiful, perhaps my favorite place in Ireland. Those stone fences that separate the island into so many small plots are, in many places, the tallest objects to be found. Even in the villages on each island, none of the buildings are very tall, and there are no trees to speak of.

What you don't quite get to see from that photo is how close that fort is to the shore. Just beyond the lower right corner are steep cliffs that plunge into the Atlantic. Makes me want to go back.

Dear Matt Thompson,

I am presently preparing a book called "La face cachée du Net" (The hidden face of the Net) to be published in November 2008 by Omniscience (publisher), http://www.omniscience.fr/collections/Collection-Essais-2/La-face-cachee-du-Net-14.html.
In this book, I wish to include one or two images published on your website :
- http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=5a045f239522bba0ab1eab3e9fa335ca1b9801a834ef8660
I would be most grateful if you would kindly grant me permission to reproduce, for this first edition and all reeditions and translations, this material in my book. Full credit will of course be given to the sources. This is a publication in black and white and the first printrun will not exceed 3,000 copies.

Thank you very much in advance.
