Ev’s New Thang
How felicitous. I was just looking around at “podcasts” last night, trying to make sense of them and maybe find something cool to listen to. No luck whatsoever.
But this morning I wake to find that Evan Williams, who helped maked blogging way easier with Blogger, is trying to do the same thing with podcasting at a new company called Odeo.
The link above goes to the NYT article; also check out Ev’s own account of Odeo’s origin. Great quote from the end of his post:
It’s about personal media, time-shifting, and the long, long tail. And I love that shit. Amazing things are going to be created.

Yeah, the podcasting thing seems like kind of a bust to me. The only decent stuff I've really come across is WGBH morning stories, Reel Reviews, and Dig radio's trial. And those are pretty marginal. Thomas Edison's Attic is... interesting. I'm not sure what makes people think this is such a great format for broadcasting. How scalable is it supposed to be to distribute 150MB files to anyone who wants your show?
For what it's worth, I've had a much better time downloading radio shows or ripping their streams and then converting them to mp3. It's a little bit more work, but you get much better listening in the end. This American Life you can just download whole shows with a minimum of hacking.
With a little more hacking you can also get a lot of good oldtimey music from the archive of Prairie Home Companion (only the last couple years or so are high enough quality to be worth while...).
And there's good indie music archived at KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic too.
Getting beyond radio feeds you can rip, there's also tons of good bootlegs very easily available on the net now. eTree is even distributing torrent files now! Plus there's the live music archive if you're into that kind of music, or nugs.net for the stoner types :).
