Running without injuries depends a lot on the preparation that you've got. I never developed any injury so far in my trainings, I believe it is due to the good preparation I do before and after every run.

I recommend some of the resources that can be found on http://www.starting-to-run.com

I'm doing my first half-marathon in 3 weeks!

I was glad to hear your story about using minimalist shoes. Reading barefoot Ken Bob's book (he's the "guru") you'd think anything other than absolute naked feet is a recipe for disaster. I also can't go back to regular shoes now that I have enjoyed the stealth feel of minimalist footwear. I tried barefoot (and wrote about it here... http://www.gydle.ch/blog/2011/09/barefoot-journal/) but it hurts too much, and I'm a total sissy, so now I just use my New Balance minimalist trail shoes ....

I second the five fingers for anyone who's developed overuse injuries from running. I didn't run for years because of old injuries and even started to have hip, back and posture problems at a relatively young age. A massage therapist friend recommended the Vibrams about a year ago and within weeks I was feeling stronger and pain free. Now they are the only shoes I wear around the house so I have one pair for that and another pair for running.

Point #1 really resonates with my biking experience. I think what finally got me really into biking was leisurely touring around SF and the Marin Headlands; it was a great way to explore and feel alive.

I don't bike much anymore now, partially because Brooklyn, San Diego, and LA aren't as conducive. But I think I also made the mistake of starting to take biking too seriously. Bike commuting is not fun (at least not for me) if I'm trying to set a new personal best all the time. Now that I've gone back to riding in to work more leisurely I'm enjoying it more the way I used to, and I'm hoping I'll be able to get back into doing it regularly.
