The last Criterion laserdisc I ever bought: Boogie Nights, which also, if I'm remembering correctly, had a pretty great commentary track.

Passivity is seriously underrated. A professor of mine used to say that there was a sexual politics (alternately reactionary and progressive) to privileging the active over the passive. Passivity is only taken seriously if you make it Extra Serious, by calling it "deep contemplation" or "critical reflection." Cognitive onanism.

I second your squee! That King Kong story is worth its pixels in gold foil and then some. I love commentary tracks.

My favorite bizarre special feature on a DVD (and I don't get to enjoy DVD special features as often as I used to, because they take so much time) is actually on the first Pirates of the Caribbean DVD: you can split screen between the story boards and the film, and as Peter says, 'it just happens to you.'

Awesome! Makes you wonder what other great value could be added to these media. Ironically, one of the things I like the most about DVD commentary is that it's freerunning; that it "just happens to you". I feel like if it were a "click your remote to learn more about this scene" kind of system it would be a lot less enjoyable/valuable. The idea that people might want to learn something new without being totally spastic about it seems kind of quaint and comforting.

While they were interviewing that guy, I wish they had asked him why Michael Bay has twice as many movies in the Criterion Collection as Scorsese...
