Number Five

Via Fimoc: trailer for Wes Anderon’s new movie, The Darjeeling Limited. If this follows the pattern established by previous Wes Anderson movies (Bottle Rocket: hated it; Rushmore: loved it; Royal Tenenbaums: hated it; Life Aquatic: loved it)… I will hate it.

But that’s okay, because the next one is The Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is based on a Roald Dahl book, and I would hate to hate that.

Boo! Hiss! Hated Bottle Rocket, I could see, and in time, forgive, but hating The Royal Tenenbaums too speaks of either a lapse in aesthetic judgment, a hard-bitten animus towards Luke Wilson, or a love of Wes Anderson only when he’s starting little clubs to fool around with geeky toys. And since this new movie looks like it’s about alienated families rather than lusty loners, it looks closer to the two Anderson films you don’t like.

–Defending the virtue of The Royal Tenenbaums since 2001.

You hated Royal Tenenbaums? We’re gonna hafta to investigate this further at some point…

Hear hear, Tim!

Uh-oh. I think Tim may have identified me precisely with his third enumerated possibility in particular. I’m in for the model planes and submarines… out for the familial strife.

But! But! Also the vibe of discovery and redemption. The scene at the end of Life Aquatic where REDACTED is transcendent. [Sorry Peter.]

Maybe Darjeeling Limited will have some of that?

Argh, spoiler alert on that /Life Aquatic/ post! Oh well, my own fault for waiting 10 million years to see a movie that I intended to see in theaters. I saw /Tenenbaums/ once and did not particularly like it, but I think I wasn’t paying attention well for some unremembered reason. It is, I take it, the kind of movie that you would totally miss the point of if you weren’t watching carefully? Or do Robin and I just have the same anti-Tenenbaum gene?

If it’s redemption, you’re looking for, it’s hard to beat the scene near the end of The Royal Tenenbaums when Chas (Ben Stiller) turns to Royal (Gene Hackman) and says, “I’ve had a tough year, Dad.” It redeems both of them.

That, and I think it might have the best pop soundtrack in the history of cinema. I mean, all of Anderson’s soundtracks are good — the use of Devo’s “Gut Feeling” in The Life Aquatic is letter-perfect — but Tenenbaums is just filled from start to finish with perfect songs.

How about props for Bad Santa for demonstrating the possibility of a royalties-free letter-perfect classical music score? I’ll give Tenenbaums another shot sometime soon.
