Joining the Parade
 /

Paprika, a new movie from Japanese director Satoshi Kon, comes out in artsy U.S. theaters this week. I saw it at the San Francisco International Film Festival and it blew my mind. No hyperbole; I was slack-jawed. Am definitely going to go see it again.

Highest A+ Snarkmarket recommendation. Buzzfeed bundle here. Metacritic roundup here. NYT not-quite-a-review here. Trailer here. Radioclub.jp here.

Wow, looks fantastic, thanks for the tip. With the state of artsy theaters in my neck of the woods, though, looks like the DVD for me.

Speaking of Satoshi Kon, did you ever see “Tokyo Godfathers” or “Millennium Actress”?

Yes, saw both! “Tokyo Godfathers” I somehow cannot remember a single thing about, though. I loved the mood & style of “Millennium Actress” — Kon pulls more tricks with juxtaposed animation styles in “Paprika.”

Robin already knows, but “Millennium Actress” is one of my favorites. Except I would have rolled the credits right after the blast-off scene instead of having the space scene at the end. And of course “Paranoia Agent” is amazing. Robin, didn’t you notice my email for our diplomacy game is “maromimindmeld” :b?

I’m terribly looking forward to this movie.

If you ever get a chance, also check out “The Girl Who Lept Through Time”. It took the animation awards in Japan by storm and picked up most of the awards last year.

Oh, this is Alex by the way (we met at 24-hour-comic-day at Comic Relief many years ago).

Peter: I actually hadn’t seen Paranoia Agent then — that’s pretty awesome though. Definitely need to drop more Maromi reference.

Alex: Right on! Thanks for the recommendation.

Since I was finding it hard to track down opening dates for this movie, thought I would make note that it has opened in SF finally, playing at the Kabuki and Stonestown.
