Both of these things will expire soon:
1) You’ve got a month to check out the Harvard Business Review’s list of breakthrough ideas for 2007 before it goes into the paid archive. Full of counterintuitive goodness, although the articles are of uneven quality. All-in-all, provocative.
2) Copy, Right? has posted a mammoth dump of cover songs, including a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Good Enough,” from The Goonies. I loved that song because it sounded obnoxiously good as the MIDI track to the NES game Goonies II. I actually remember Goonies II being a surprisingly creepy and atmospheric game; it had these maze sequences scored by a brooding arpeggio that just freaked me out.

The Tiziano Ferro song, “Stop! Dimentica” is my favorite pop song from my time in Italy last summer. I guess it does bear a striking similarity to the Kelly Osbourne song “One Word” (which I had never heard of until following the above link) but it’s way, way better.
And the video is pretty sweet too.
And, in case anyone is wondering, the runner up for my favorite Italian pop song from summer ’06 was:
Il Mondo Nuovo by Neffa, which also has a stellar video.
The lighting effects in the video for “Il Mondo Nuevo” are really good. That is, assuming it’s not augmented at all by digital editing.
Yeah, the lighting is the thing that first caught my attention in the video.
It looks to my trained eye like it’s all old school lighting brilliance: A simple set up used to great effect. The mirror used is likewise simple in concept, very arresting in execution.
Whenever I was just hanging around my flat in Lucca last summer, I would often have MTV or the All Music channel on the TV. It was a nice way to get some exposure to the European pop scene and see some great videos.
Some of the English tracks that I heard in July are slowly making their way to our radio waves (e.g., The Kooks – Naive, Lily Allen – Smile).
Also, totally my bad — it’s “Il Mondo Nuovo.” The scary thing about that is that I actually know a little bit of Italian, and should know better. I wish we could edit these comments.
I still haven’t decided whether I love Lily Allen or loath her.
