Watchmen: Absolute Edition
 /

Wow, I didn’t know there was a fancy new hardback edition of Watchmen, the greatest graphic novel produced by mankind to date. (TIME called it one of the 100 greatest novels, graphic or not, of the century — nice.)

I note it because I was actually just flipping through Watchmen last night, marveling as I always do at its really peculiar and appealing vibe. I guess it’s probably just the vibe of the ’80s… but there is something very nostalgic about it, too. If you’ve read the book, I’m curious to hear if you know what I mean.

I don’t think it’s a new edition. When only z-sellers are selling something, it’s usually an out-of-print edition (even though Amazon lists an October 5, 2005 “release” date).

I love Watchmen, though. There are so many things that Alan Moore does right. It’s almost as if he sat down and said “what would it be like if there were superheroes in the real world?” None of the “superheroes” have any powers–they’re just do-gooders in masks. Of course, then Dr. Manhattan, who actually has powers, comes along and screws everyone up.

There’s far more to say, of course, but it’s your blog. 🙂

From what I can gather, it’s similar to a hardcover edition originally published in extreeeemely limited quantities in the late ’80s, but with new colors. I might have linked to the wrong thing on Amazon…

Also, I’m not sure you understand the Ideal Snarkmarket Model, Gavin… I pose the thought-provoking questions and then all smart Snarkmarket readers provide penetrating and/or amusing responses 🙂

The hardcover edition I own (and rarely even let out into oxygenated atmosphere) is DC/Graphitti, so I think this is a brand new edition.

Are they still making a movie adaptation? It will no doubt be hilariously bad and make all us Watchmen fans sad and alarmed, but here’s a fun game my nerdlinger friends and I play over beers: Who would you cast as each Watchmen character?

I like Harvey Keitel as the Comedian.

On second look at the Amazon page, I think you’re right that this is a new edition. (I don’t know if they changed the page in the last 24 hours or if I just had a 150 pixel by 150 pixel blind spot. Sadly, I think the second is more likely.)

$75 list price! Holy crap.

Rorschach, hmm, short, ugly, maybe Clint Howard in a wig? tried to think about casting Dr. Manhattan, but I couldn’t get around the fact that I’d be casting someone’s wang. Maybe Harvey Keitel?

🙂

haha…I’ve seen enough of Harvey’s bidness, thanks. A friend tipped me off to this today…warning: it not only will make you dread the movie, it may cause nausea and indigestion:
