The Moral Hazard Myth

I’m on a tear! I found this New Yorker piece on the ideas behind health insurance by Malcolm Gladwell (he of “The Tipping Point” and “Blink”) lucid and enlightening. This is my favorite kind of journalism.

If I were design an add campaign for the idea of distributed health care, I’d play to the idea of the caring, sharing small town.

“If someone is sick in your neighborhood, you would bring them a cassarole or some chicken soup, right? Why would do that? You do it because you care about your neighbor and you know that the town will be better off if she is well. You do it because you know she would do the same for you.

National health insurance is just one, big, heartwarming bowl of chicken soup. And it makes the whole town happier.”
