Jared Diamond has a new book. Malcolm Gladwell has a new article. Some correlation exists between these two joyous events.

OMG! Jared Diamond book! Why was I not told of this earlier??
In other books-of-immense-scope news, I’m reading “The Unconquerable World” by Jonathan Schell right now, and it’s rocking my world.
Wait! Wait! Gladwell has a new book coming out soon too!!! A mighty confluence, indeed.
From Gladwell’s article, loosely quoting Diamond:
“[T]oo often, we… assume that biological survival is contingent on the strength of our civilizational values… The fact is, though, that we can be law-abiding and peace-loving and tolerant and inventive and committed to freedom and true to our own values and still behave in ways that are biologically suicidal.”
Wow.
